Happenings for the TVQG General Meeting In May 2024

The following things will be taking place at our May 21, 2024 General Meeting.

Our currently scheduled speaker is Anya Doll

Following is Anya’s  Artist Statement.

“I explore similarities in apparent opposites. This has led me to both challenging and inspiring places. Chaos is inherent at all stages of life. I found however that making art was a far preferable response than challenging life to wrestling matches. Facing the tensions inherent in the human condition by lovingly creating out of the very messiness and even pain of living has become my passion. In recent years, navigating deeply challenging places my husband’s mental illness led us, often required more of me than I could give. Two years before he ended his life in 2015, I segued from acrylic painting to “painting with thread” — that is freestyle machine stitching of collaged fibers.

Pain, I have found, becomes a transformative practice while creating meditation/prayer tapestries. Initially inspired by Buddhist Prayer flags in the Himalayas, these flags can be hung tied together or stand alone and be framed. Each is made by layering hundreds of fibers and fabrics to create an effect of colors glowing up from below. Then I lower the feeder feet on my sewing machine and move the piece around to sew in the details. They have frayed edges to symbolize the release of our intentions to love without the deterioration in the elements.

Fat Quarter of the Month

At each general meeting, our quilters bring in various themed fat quarters. For each Fat Quarter brought in the quilter receives a raffle ticket.

Nancy Goldsworthy to Speak at March 2024 Meeting

Nancy Goldsworthy of ninepatchquilting.com will be the featured speaker at TVQG’s March 19, 2024 General Meeting.  Here is some information about Nancy:

Sewing has been my passion since I was very young. My love for fabric has driven my career from my first job in a shirt factory to my current longarm quilting business. Along my journey, I have learned the ins and outs of both the garment and fabric industries. From working with the fabric vendors to sending the finished product out the door, I have done it all.

But, my favorite part is still sitting and sewing the pieces together. The repetition of picking up the pieces and stitching them one after another is very soothing, even after the roughest day. Quilting has been my focus for the past 20 years. I love the colors and patterns that are formed as you stitch. I can spend hours at my machine taking little pieces and stitching them into big pieces. And when that part is done, I get to quilt them!

I purchased my longarm machine in 1999 and everything changed. Now I could start a quilt and have it pieced, quilted, bound, and finished in days, rather than weeks! I also discovered that there was very little information available to help us learn how to operate these wonderful machines. Frustration with the big machines was a common topic of conversation amongst longarm quilters. Thread breakage, batting issues, and stitch quality were always the first issues on everyone’s list, except mine. My many years in industrial sewing gave me an insight into how needles, threads, and fabrics worked and why. And a new career was born.

I discovered not only that quilters needed the information that I had gleaned in 30 years working with the industrial machines, but that I enjoyed teaching them. There is nothing better than watching the light come on over their heads when they “got it”. I also discovered that I enjoy writing. I have had 4 books published on the technical parts of needles, threads, batting, and more. The original books are currently out of print, but look for the new updated versions to be ready soon.

Marcy Shinder to Speak at February 2024 Meeting

TVQG would like to welcome Marcy Shinder of justforfunquilting.com as our guest speaker at the February 20, 2024, TVQG Meeting.

Here is some information about her:  Marcy began her long-arm quilting career on a manually-operated machine in a local quilt shop. Shortly thereafter she purchased her own long-arm and worked out of her garage. It was pretty lonely however, and she soon found herself – and her long-arm – working out of a local quilt shop. When that shop closed, Marcy opened her own Local Quilt Shop in 2005. And here she is now with two long-arm quilting machines (and dreams of a third), fabric, classes, and a great staff to back her up! Marcy is a past president of Clark County Quilt Guild and backs up her charity mission by quilting for Linus, Children’s Justice Center, Quilts of Valor, and Cancer Care. She often walks through the shop talking to herself – oh, wait – she’s doing business on her blue-tooth ear phone! Or maybe she’s still talking to herself…

TVQG February Drawings and Prizes

Door Prizes

At every meeting TVQG holds a monthly drawing awarding two door prizes.  But, because we cancelled the January Meeting due to the weather conditions that doesn’t mean the January door prizes won’t be awarded. We’ll be handing out the cash door prizes for both months at the February meeting.

Fat Quarter of the Month

TVQG decided that we’ll accept both of the January and February Fat Quarter themes for this month’s Fat Quarter of the month drawing.  The January theme was snowflakes, light blue, or white.  February’s is hearts, love, candy hearts, red, pink, white, or Valentines. Members may submit one or both of the FQ’s themes at the February meeting. Reminder – for each fat quarter that is submitted you will receive a drawing ticket to receive a bundle of fat quarters.  For our think-ahead members, the Fat Quarter theme for March will be tulips, daffodils, spring colors.

2023 UFO Drawing

Unfortunately the jar containing the UFO tickets for the 2023 UFO drawing was lost or misplaced.  To correct the situation, here is what we are planning to do; a new and clearly marked UFO 2023 ticket jar will in placed at February Meeting Member Check-in table.  Everyone attending the February meeting no matter how many UFO’s they completed in 2023 will be given two door prize tickets to put in the jar.  We will be awarding three cash prizes in the amount of $20 each during the meeting. However, only one prize will be awarded per person. Starting in March 2024, using our original challenge rules, we’ll offer our members the same UFO Challenge with similar prizes, but we promise no lost ticket jars this year.

Block of the Month

Because there was no BOM presented in January we will have a BOM Drawing for the BOM’s that was presented in November and was supposed to be awarded in January.  We’ll present a new BOM pattern at the February Meeting and pick up with regularly scheduled BOM’s going forward.

TVQG Donates Eight Quilts to Hopewell House

About ten days ago, TVQG was contacted by the Friends of Hopewell House asking if we had any quilts available for donations. TVQG sent out an all-member communication.  Our membership rose to the challenge and donated eight quilts.  Quilt donations were received from TVQG members Jenice Poff, Carol-Lee, and Carol Springer. They were delivered to a Hopewell House representative on January 30, 2024.

Hopewell House is an end-of-life care facility.  When a new client is admitted to Hopewell House they are allowed to pick a comfort quilt to use while they are in the care of the facility.  Then after their passing their quilt is shared as a remembrance with their family.

It is a true honor for TVQG to share quilts for this cause, and we are thankful to play a small part in bringing comfort to someone approaching their final days.
