Demo Night at August meeting

Demo NightTVQG’s August program will be a Demo Night with Su Scott, Robin O’Neil, and Victoria Jones demonstrating various quilting techniques. You’re sure to pick up a new technique or quilting idea (or two) from each of these talented quilters. The finished block size is 12” x 12”. It’s suggested that you use red, white, and blue fabrics. We’ll hold a drawing for the blocks at our August 15th meeting.

TVQG meetings in King City

King City ClubhouseREMINDER: Starting this month the Tualatin Valley Quilt Guild will hold its monthly speaker meetings at the King City Civic Center Clubhouse. It’s just off Hwy 99 at 15245 SW 116th Ave, King City, OR.

The July speaker meeting will feature Teresa Coates, a quiltmaker whose quilts and sewing projects have appeared in Quilty, Stitch, Quiltmakers’ 100 Quilt Blocks, Generation Q, and American Quilt Retailer. The meeting will be Tuesday, July 18th, starting at 7 pm.

Teresa Coates to speak at July meeting

Teresa CoatesSpeaking at our July meeting will be Teresa Coates, a maker and writer with a penchant for sewing, quilting, teaching, and adventure.

Her quilts and sewing projects have appeared in Quilty, Stitch, Quiltmakers’ 100 Quilt Blocks, Generation Q, and American Quilt Retailer. She speaks at both local and national venues about a variety of topics including modern takes on traditional blocks, patchwork with curves, applique techniques, garment sewing for quilters, and more. July block-of-the-month

Buttercup blockTVQG members are invited to make the buttercup block for our July block-of-the-month. Instructions are available in our members-only section. The finished block size is 9” x 9”. It’s suggested that you use a cream background, green for the leaf, yellow for the flower bud, and any color for the flower. We’ll hold a drawing for the blocks at our July 18th meeting.

Brown bag auction at June meeting

paper bagTVQG’s June program is a brown bag auction. To participate in this auction simply bring any sewing or quilting items that you no longer need, use, or want to the June 20th General Meeting. Auction Items may include notions, rulers, templates, tools, all types of fabrics, patterns, thread, books, and sewing or quilting equipment. Used items are fine, as long as they are in usable condition.

Meeting attendees may purchase auction bid tickets and will be assigned an auction number. The cost of tickets is 5 for $1.00.

To bid on an item all you need to do is mark your tickets with your auction number, then drop a ticket into the brown bag sitting in front of the auction item you would like to bid on.

Members will be responsible for taking home unsold items, but we’re going to have a charity donation box where you may place your unsold items if you decide not to take them home with you.

The May meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 20th, starting at 7 pm at the Sherwood Senior Center, 21907 SW Sherwood Blvd, Sherwood, OR.

June block-of-the-month

Karen Miller to speak at May meeting

Our guest speaker for the May meeting is Karen Miller, a quilt artist with expertise in Japanese quilting. Karen worked as a marine biologist at Oregon State University for many years, but came to realize that she was always an artist too. She says her art is often inspired by her scientific background.

Karen’s interest in textiles and all things Japanese extends back to her childhood. Fiber art gradually became her medium. She first took up embroidery, then quilting and surface design. In 1994 Karen was introduced to katazome, or stencil dyeing, which uses a paper stencil to apply rice paste resist before dyeing or painting the fabric. She prefers to make her own fabric with recognizable imagery and fine detail.

The May meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 16th, starting at 7 pm at the Sherwood Senior Center, 21907 SW Sherwood Blvd, Sherwood, OR.

Robin O’Neil to speak at April meeting

Torn quiltOur guest speaker for the April General Meeting is Robin O’Neil. Robin has a unique talent for finding and rescuing quilts that are worn or in need of repair. Using her techniques, worn quilts are returned back to beautiful and usable quilts. Robin’s presentation will include an overview of her techniques and a display of some of her rescued quilts.

The April meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 18th, starting at 7 pm at the Sherwood Senior Center, 21907 SW Sherwood Blvd, Sherwood, OR.
